Limited library services: update 29 June

Reopening the libraries

Monash Public Library Service have reintroduced more services at all sites in line with physical distancing guidelines and State Government advice. 

  • You are now able to browse our collections.
  • We ask that you limit your time in the library to 30 minutes unless studying or using the public computers
  • Independent use of PCs for a single 1 hour period is now available with appropriate safeguards in place.
  • You can study in the library at designated spots for up to 90 mins.
  • Newspapers are not available.
  • Up to 20 people will be allowed in our libraries at any one time. Some branches may admit fewer people.
  • Details of patrons are required to be noted as a condition of entry.
  • We continue to offer many services online, such as storytimes and how to videos on our YouTube channel. We have an extended range of online resources for you to access from the comfort of your own home.

Hours of opening

Please see our revised opening hours. Mulgrave Library will be open on Tuesdays 10am-5pm, Wednesdays 2pm - 7pm and Thursday 1.30pm-5pm

Patrons can also contact staff by phone during these times if they cannot get to the library.


Returns

  • Please use the after hours returns chutes at each branch (except Mulgrave).
  • Clayton Library will also have a returns chute in the foyer
  • Returned items are quarantined for 24 hours. 

 

Conditions of entry

  • Only up to 20 customers in the library at any one time, dependant on branch limits.
  • A concierge service is available in library branch foyers to help manage safe access.
  • Staff can serve customers only from screened areas.

 

Concierge services

  • A concierge will meet you before the library doors asking which service you wish to use.
  • We reserve the right to exclude customers who are showing signs of illness.
  • Due to limited access the concierge may ask you to come back at a later time.
  • The concierge will ask for your name, telephone number and provide hand sanitiser.

 

Borrowing

  • Libraries are now open for general browsing of the collections and customers can select their items.
  • You can study in the library at designated spots for up to 90 mins.
  • The usual loan limit is 30 items per library card. This does not include any eBooks or eAudio Books you may also have borrowed.
  • All items can now be loaned for 28 days (including DVDs and CDs). 
  • All magazines are available for loan.
  • If you would like to limit your time in the library you can call ahead for staff to make selections for you.
  • Junior book bundles are available to make borrowing easier for parents.
  • Book club sets can be collected from the library. Book clubs are unable to meet in the library.
  • Home library service is available.
  • Overdue charges will no longer apply from 1 July 2020. Any historical charges on library accounts will not prevent borrowers from using the self-issuing terminals to borrow books and will be removed.
  • After 1 July you must have returned all items by their due date to borrow.
  • Lost and damaged charges will still apply.
  • Seating in the library will only be available for frail or disabled community members, and for those with computer or study bookings. Computers and study spaces will be spaced the appropriate physical distance apart.

Reservations

  • Borrowers will be able to self-collect reservations.
  • Wait until you receive a reservation available email or letter before coming to pick-up the item(s)
  • Statewide Interlibrary loans service resumed on 1 July. Returns are accepted.

 

Information services/Ask a Librarian

  • Librarians are available for information queries and advice including memberships.
  • Photo ID is required for membership.
  • Ask a Librarian online service is available.
  • Check our Online events and groups.

 

Computer, print, photocopying and wifi services

Public computer use has resumed with a single 1 hour session per day.

  • Self managed printing, photocopying and scanning to USB is now available.
  • Wi-fi hotspots available for up to 1 hr per day per user. Call the branch you wish to visit to find out how it’s being managed.

Unavailable Services

These include:

  • Newspapers. Library members can access a range of digital newspapers (and magazines) through Press Reader using their library card number and passcode. 
  • Drinking water
  • Vending machines
  • Phone charging
  • Printed flyers for events
  • Children's storytimes, babytimes - (available online only)
  • School holiday program - (available online only)
  • Events, programs, clubs and activities in the library
  • Visits to external organisations

 

Hygiene

  • For staff and customer safety please don't visit us if you are unwell.
  • Hand sanitiser will be available at all branches. Please use on entry and exit.
  • Staff will be wiping self-check units after use.
  • Please bring your library card and quote the number to staff if needed.
  • Extra cleaning will done in each branch and cleaning of computer equipment will be done after each customer.
  • Toilets are available at each branch except Mulgrave
