In the October 2016 elections, 5 first-time Councillors were elected to Monash Council, alongside 6 Councillors with previous experience.
In mid-2016, Monash gained 2 new Councillors: Nga Hosking in Oakleigh Ward and John Sharkey in Mulgrave Ward. They replaced Stefanie Perri and Paul Klisaris, who both resigned from Council to stand as candidates in the Federal Election.
Both councillors were elected via countbacks of the 2012 Council election results. In each of their wards, the votes for the vacating Councillor were redistributed to unsuccessful candidates according to the voters' preferences. Once Cr Hosking and Cr Sharkey had received more than 50% of these votes, they were elected.
Council's Term of Office was increased from 3 years to 4 years after changes were made to the Local Government Act 1989.
New ward boundaries and electoral structure were introduced by the State Government following an Electoral Representation Review conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission.
This new structure increased the number of Councillors to 11 and created 4 multi-member Wards: 3 Wards with 3 Councillors each; 1 Ward with 2 Councillors.
