Media response - Gambling advocacy

Published on 04 April 2023

Approach from Herald Sun and Channel 7

You may have seen the Andrews government has this morning announced new measures for Crown Casino including time caps on gambling and weekly limits.

This is only specific to Crown Casino, but I wanted to see if Monash Council - who I understand has recently called on the government to take greater action on gambling venues within the municipality - wanted to provide a comment on this?

Does Monash believe that these new laws at Crown need to be introduced at every venue including ones within Monash?

Response

Monash Council has long been a leading advocate to reducing the harm of gambling on our community. Any measures to curb this harm are to be encouraged, but we believe other levels of government need to take even further action – including reduced and set hours for all pokies venues, reform to pokies design that include $1 maximum bets, and no gambling advertising during sports broadcasts.
