Media Response Local Government Bill

Questions and Responses

Are you concerned about any aspects of the Local Government Bill?

We are writing to the Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek  with our concerns about the restructure proposed in the Local Government Bill 2019 to move to single member wards. We’d like the consultation on this bill, particularly the latest amendments, to be extended for further consideration by Councils.

Do you think single member wards are bad for diversity? If yes, why?

Council strongly believes that the current four-ward, multi-member structure provides voters and the Monash community, as a whole, with fair and equitable representation. Council would like to further understand the rationale that has informed the Minister’s preferred position to move to single member wards.

Could I have a copy of Monash's submission please?

The submission will be provided to the Minister prior to the 17 July 2019 deadline.  We presume that at some point after that Local Government Victoria will make all submissions public.
