Media Response Mount Waverley College Parking

Questions and Responses

ENQUIRY

Had a resident contact me with parking issues in residential streets around Mt Waverley Secondary College. Predominantly Marianne Way, but also Jacqueline St, Simpson Drive and Lechte Rd.

Main issue is at pick-up and drop-off times, with parents and buses not only parking on the no standing side of the street, but also blocking off driveways and even in driveways.

Says it has become a seven-day-a-week issue after a weekend school opened up.

Says he's complained to school and council many times.

RESPONSE

What is the parking situation in the area?

The parking restrictions around Mount Waverley Secondary College are typical of those around most schools, where parking is generally confined to the school side of adjacent streets and to one side of other nearby streets.  In addition to the school drop-off and pick-up times, we know there is also increased traffic on weekends around Mount Waverley Secondary College so Council has implemented some full time Permit Zone restrictions (for residents only).  Where parking is permitted adjacent to the school there are some locations with short term parking for drop off/pick-up purposes and No Stopping restrictions for road safety and traffic movement.  During the day there are right turn restrictions in place on to Stephensons Road from Lechte and Gordon Roads to minimise delays for traffic leaving the area.

Does council monitor illegal parking in these areas?

Council actively enforces parking restrictions around all schools, at school times, in response to safety concerns raised by schools and the community in general. Since 1 July 2018 we have conducted approximately 46 patrols of the area around Mount Waverley College’s two campuses and 15 of those patrols occurred on a weekend. We will continue to patrol this area and issue fines if people do the wrong thing.

Are there any figures as to how many people have been warned/fined in the area?

77 fines and no warnings were issued during these patrols.

Have there been many complaints about the area?

It is not unusual for residents to raise concerns with Council about poor parking behaviour at pick up and drop off times at schools and around worksites . Since 1 July 2018 we have received 12 complaints about parking behaviour in this area. Of these, seven complaints were associated with parking issues during school times and the remainder were associated with tradespeople and building works at sites in the school area.
