Media Response Smoke Free Local Law

In May this year, Council adopted the Smoke Free Areas Local Law 2021, which enables it to declare smoke-free areas. On Tuesday 31 August at its monthly meeting, Council will consider making areas in and around Eaton Mall, Oakleigh and Kingsway Glen Waverley, smoke-free. If passed, this will come into effect on 19 October.

Smoke free areas are not unusual in these settings. The ban will mean that visitors can enjoy the area without dealing with the impacts of second-hand smoke. We will also continue to encourage smoking cessation, reducing harm and de-normalising smoking behaviours. Our officers will observe compliance as part of their usual patrols. These laws do rely on people doing the right thing, and respecting the rights of other people in the area and their enjoyment and expectation that they can do so in a smoke free environment as created by the Local Law. Smoking in a smoke free area can attract a $200 fine.
