Mulgrave Library opening

Grab your book bags – the new and improved Mulgrave Library is back open for business.

The neighbourhood library has re-opened following an upgrade project which has seen the library space nearly double its previous size to 46m2.

Premier Daniel Andrews joined Mayor Stuart James last week to officially open the improved facility.

The upgraded library offers:

  • Integration between the library and e-cafe
  • After hours book return chute
  • Larger book collection, including materials in languages other than English for our culturally diverse community
  • Quiet reading nook
  • Contemporary e-cafe and kitchenette area shared with the users of the Wellington Reserve Community Centre.

Mayor Stuart James said the project aimed to provide a greater sense of place and neighbourhood identity for the Mulgrave community.

“This is a special facility for many of our local residents and I’m proud we have been able to listen to their feedback and deliver this project to them,” Cr James said.

“We know our libraries are vital places of connection and we’re delighted to provide our community with an accessible service point where they can learn, connect and create in a contemporary and welcoming environment.”

The upgrade follows a 2018 Feasibility Study which recommended consolidating and growing the library service by offering more services and increasing opening hours, as well as expanding the library space.

Community consultation was undertaken in early 2020, where the community asked Council to provide more space, while retaining the appeal of an intimate library.  

Council received a Victorian Government Living Libraries Infrastructure Program grant of $117,500 towards the upgrade.

Construction took place between January – March 2022.
