Smart Stormwater Sensors

Water draining into a sewer

Monash has more than 50,500 stormwater pits strategically located for flood protection of homes, schools, roads, childcare and aged care facilities. Inspecting, maintaining and cleaning the pits is resource-intensive and time-consuming.

The Smart Cities Program includes the installation of smart sensors in 3000 stormwater pits, providing information on the condition of individual pits and whether they need cleaning or clearing, preventing issues with blocked drains and pits and improving community safety.

These sensors provide real-time data on the pit fill level, accessible to Council staff through a cloud-based dashboard, allowing for a more streamlined maintenance schedule and faster response times to incidents.

So far, we have installed 71 smart sensors in various stormwater pits around Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley and Clayton.
