Griffiths Bros Coffee brewing up business

Peter Patisteas and Chris Togias from Griffiths Bros. Coffee

Griffiths Bros. Coffee has been brewing up business in Melbourne for 140 years, helping to fuel the city’s renowned love affair with coffee.

The iconic Australian company, which has a world-class roastery tucked away in a cul-de-sac in Mulgrave, has spent decades honing its craft, carefully curating and roasting the finest beans from 20 countries around the globe.

Now the company is blending tradition with contemporary best practice to ensure a sustainable future for the coffee industry.

Founded by brothers James and John Griffiths in 1879, the company has changed hands over the years, but it’s still proudly family-owned.

Brothers-in law Peter Patisteas and Chris Togias took over 15 years ago.

Chris said the company’s passion for people and love of high-quality coffee remained core ingredients in its success story along with a fresh focus on sustainability.

“Our providence gives us the platform to pursue smart, sustainable strategies and kick off broader conversations about balancing purpose and profit,” he said.

“For us, sustainability means minimising our environmental impact, maximising our social impact and creating economic sustainability for coffee growers, cafe owners and coffee consumers.

“We're doing what we can to reduce carbon emissions at our roastery, finding ways to reuse coffee waste, and using clever minds from inside and outside the industry to tackle supply chain challenges.”

The company runs a closed-loop system, upcycling coffee husks onsite to produce briquettes, snail pellets and animal litter, which are used by sustainability partners Zoos Victoria, Collingwood Children's Farm, Yellingbo Free Range Eggs and Yarra Valley Estate.

Bulk coffee bags are recycled and water is harvested for use in the garden behind the roastery.

“We’ve also started keeping bees out the back and plan to start making our own honey,” Chris said.

Along with its sustainability commitments, the company also has a rich history of customer support and innovation, employing ex-baristas who can train cafe staff to perfect their brew and offer advice on any service issues.

The company’s now exploring new opportunities, including introducing a line of Australian bush teas and investigating potential export markets.
