In June 2016, Council adopted a 30-year strategy to improve and protect Monash’s valued street tree canopy. With the strategy, Council is aiming to achieve high-quality, consistently-planted and attractive avenues. While Monash's existing tree canopy is of reasonable health, there are several challenges including:
- Significant gaps in the existing tree canopy (10%). There are currently about 87,600 street trees in Monash with provision to accommodate a further 12,500
- Many of our trees are in decline and will require replacement within the next 30 years
- Increasing densification and the associated loss of trees within private properties means the role of street trees is becoming increasingly important
The vision of the Street Tree Strategy is to establish a Street Tree Canopy that will be the source of neighbourhood and City pride and create a network of engaging and inviting green corridors, encouraging walking, cycling and street activity and deliver tangible benefits to local communities.
The strategy identifies trees that are in declining health and will need to be replaced over time. It is about delivering a vision for Monash where the trees, in any particular street, are the best choice for that part of our municipality (taking into account available growing space, proximity to infrastructure like overhead power lines and footpaths, as well as neighbourhood character).

Year 2: Street Tree Strategy Implementation
Following this resolution Council completed the 16 streets in Year 1 of the strategy resulting in the removal of 156 trees, replacement of 133 trees and the planting of 165 additional trees. Council has allocated $240,000 in this year’s budget to progress with implementing Year 2 of our 30-year Street Tree Strategy

Year 1: Street Tree Strategy Implementation
A street tree renewal plan was developed, with 16 streets identified for tree removals and re-plantings in 2017. In some of these streets, there were anchor trees - healthy mature trees which contribute to the quality of the streetscape - which will be retained alongside the new plantings. Similar re-planting programs in other streets were proposed for future years.
Residents of Andleigh Drive (Mulgrave) have already selected their preferred species for planting over the next 12 months. In the other 15 streets, residents were able to choose from one of two suitable species.

GLOSSARY
Declining health and not expected to recover –the tree is in poor health and no arboricultural practice can aid recovery.
Dead Tree –a tree that has reached its safe useful life expectancy.
Poor Form and/or Structure –the shape and symmetry of the trees canopy is compromised.
Deadwood Greater than 50 per cent –more than half of the canopy is dead.
Significant pest, disease or decay present –an area of the tree is decomposing, is affected by substantial pest attack and/or the tree is affected by a fungus or bacteria that won’t respond to treatment.
Hazard Trees –The tree may cause property damage or personal injury because it is dead or has a structural defect or change in growing conditions.
