A $5.8 million upgrade of Atherton Road has been completed. The works include:

  • Installation of 13 street lighting poles along Atherton Road, between Warrigal Road and Clyde Street. Six of these poles are “smart” poles – part of the exciting “i-Sense Oakleigh: The Smart Connected Precinct” project that aims to provide and pilot a range of smart technologies around Oakleigh, including lighting, bin sensors and pit sensors connected to a central control point. Smart lighting can be controlled and adjusted remotely. Monash University is our technical partner for i-Sense Oakleigh, contributing $70,000 to the project. The Federal Government has contributed $700,000
  • New traffic signal poles
  • Asphalting of the road
  • New widened footpaths with granite paving
  • Indented and modified parking bays that will create larger areas for the protection of the remaining street trees and allow them more space in which to grow
  • Improved stormwater drainage with water-sensitive urban design elements to minimise and manage street tree root problems
  • Planting of maturing Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) to preserve the green space valued by the Oakleigh community. The Norway Maple is useful in urban areas as a street tree due to its dense growth habit, heat tolerance and its richly coloured scorch-resistant summer foliage. Understorey vegetation has also been planted.

As part of the road reconstruction works on Atherton Road, Council assessed the health of the trees on the road and whether there were invasive roots.

Council identified 13 trees on Atherton Road between Warrigal Road and Atkinson Street that require removal due to their invasive roots. The trees were replaced with the advanced Norway Maple trees.
