Kingsway Redevelopment

The Glen Waverley Activity Centre is one of Monash’s most thriving dining and retail centres with Kingsway at the heart of day and night-time activity in the precinct. It is nearly 40 years since the last major upgrade of Kingsway and the street is due for a major overhaul to bring it in line with the requirements of the GWAC Structure Plan. There is a significant opportunity to revisit the role of Kingsway – to shift the balance from a street dominated by car movement and parking to a safe and welcoming environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

This project is year two of a three-year consultation and design project to guide the redevelopment of Kingsway between Bogong Avenue and O'Sullivan Road. Year one focused on establishing an agreed vision for Kingsway supported by community consultation, stakeholder engagement and the development of a schematic design. This was underpinned by site investigations and feasibility assessments. Year two will deliver a detailed reference design including plans for pavements, grading and levels, lighting and smart infrastructure, typical construction details and planting selections.

The project includes:

  • removal of 99 kerbside car parking spaces between Bogong Avenue and O'Sullivan Rd
  • narrowed carriageway widths and pavement widening for outdoor dining/trading and pedestrian movement
  • upgraded materials palette including granite pavement
  • new street tree planting and water sensitive urban design (WSUD) infrastructure
  • new street furniture
  • new street lighting and smart technology.

The design work is expected by mid-2023.

Haverback Drive, Mulgrave

Road rehabilitation design works to improve access, visual amenity, car and pedestrian safety and improve drainage will be undertaken with design work to be completed mid-2023.

The works will include:

  • drainage improvements
  • addressing scraping issues for vehicles on driveway crossings
  • improved pedestrian and vehicle safety.
