We will be running FREE fitness classes throughout September as part of our Active Communities program.

Active Outdoors is an exciting initiative which provides free, inclusive and sustainable opportunities for our community to be active in both structured and unstructured physical activity.

Fitness Camp

 

2pm, Mondays

Work through a guided movement bodyweight outdoor gym circuit, enjoy the outdoors and increase physical activity at your pace.

PramFit

10.40am, Tuesdays

A program for mums by a post-natal specialist. Take a guided informative walk with the baby in a pram, meet other mums and create connections while exercising and learning about the pelvic floor post birth.

Meditation

 

12.45pm, Tuesdays

Standing meditation makes use of specific relaxed abdominal breathing, use of mental imagery, and awareness of the inside of your body. An ancient Chinese martial art that uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation in both body and mind.

Walking Basketball 

10.30am, Wednesdays

Walking Basketball is a low impact, social and fun way to improve the levels of physical activity for older and inactive Australia, including those recovering from injury. Walking Basketball is played with a size 5 basketball, on a modified hip height, or lowered, ring. Five on five game play, with rest breaks where required.

When: 7, 14, 21, 29 September 

Cost: FREE, followed by morning tea

Dementia Friendly Group Class

11.30am, Wednesdays

A friendly class specifically designed for those with early-stage dementia to help individuals move and exercise in a safe and fun environment. Led by experienced and qualified group exercise

instructors, this class is engaging and fun. The class will work on improving functional strength, flexibility, and cognitive stimulation. Exercising helps to prevent falls and maintains healthy mind, body and spirit. Other positive effects include improved mood, sleep, and quality of life.

Cost: $7.90 per person

Free Kids Come and Try Tennis Night

 


4.45pm-5.45pm, Thursday 8 September

Mayfield Park Tennis Club is offering an evening of FREE hot shots coaching for kids aged 4+. This one-hour come and try event will be supported by in-house coaches for those who would like to learn how to play tennis or just have a hit. All equipment will be provided at the club.

Table Tennis Victoria Pop-up Event

12pm-2pm, Friday 9 September

Table Tennis Victoria is hosting a FREE pop-up 'come and try' Table Tennis event.

Monash residents aged 16+ are welcome to join a two-hour social event for beginners or those that wish to have a casual game. There will be staff onsite to assist and provide support for those new to Table Tennis.

Free Women's Come and Try Tennis Night

6pm-8pm, Friday 9 September

Mayfield Park Tennis Club is hosting a FREE come and try tennis event for women aged 16+. There will be free coaching on-site, social play with drinks and nibbles. All equipment is provided at the club. Beginners welcome, no experience required.

Sports Locker

 

Open the locker and get active 

Borrow sports equipment for FREE from the Clayton and Oakleigh libraries to use at near-by sports facilities!

Equipment available to borrow

  • Oakleigh Library: soccer balls, AFL (Australian Rules) balls and frisbees
  • Clayton Library: table tennis bats and balls, netballs and basketballs

Borrowing time: 4-hour limit

How to borrow: Simply leave a form of ID with the library branch, which you can collect back when the equipment is returned and sanitised with wipes provided. You'll also need to sign an agreement. Being a library member isn’t essential.

The Sports Locker program is available during library branch operating hours: Clayton LibraryOakleigh Library

This program provides an opportunity for local families to ‘Participate Their Way’ by removing the cost of club membership, registration fees, uniforms and equipment, and utilising the libraries' systems to hire out sports equipment within Clayton and Oakleigh local areas.

Junior Come and Try Baseball Day

9.30am-11.3.0am, Sunday 4 and 11 September

Waverley Baseball Club is hosting FREE come and try days for juniors in September. Play a fun, inclusive, active sport in a safe environment. Boys and girls aged 8-15 years are welcome to join.

Beginners welcome, no experience required. All equipment will be provided for ages 8-11. Helmets provided for all kids. Some gloves and bats available for kids 11+.

Introductory Self-Defence Program - This Girl Can Victoria and Senshi Karate

10am-12pm, Sunday 18 September

This free class is open to all women and teenage girls (16 years and over). Gender diverse, trans women and non-binary people are welcome in this class. Participants are welcome to join us for afternoon tea following the session.

This session will be run by Sensei Mark and his team of experienced female karate students from Senshi Karate School. Sensei Mark will teach you the theory and basics behind self-defence techniques to help improve your physical and mental well-being.

If you want to feel confident in your self-defence skills, then this is class for you!

Senshi Karate School has been part of the Glen Waverley community for close on a decade, empowering women, and girls with effective and easy to learn self-defence skills.

In this introductory program you will learn basic self-defence techniques appropriate to all ages, and respectful of lifestyle, gender, and culture. No prior training or minimum fitness is required, and the program is conducted in a non-threatening, enjoyable environment.
