Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh)

Monash Gallery of Art Service Point

Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh) is the Australian home of photography. We champion Australian photography, and inspire audiences to embrace, explore and value photography.

As Australia’s leading public art gallery devoted to the collection and exhibition of photography, we engage local, national and international audiences in arts and cultural experiences.

An initiative of the City of Monash, MAPh opened in 1990. Located in Wheelers Hill, MAPh is a key cultural facility and a popular destination for those interested in art and photography from across Melbourne.

Entry to MAPh is free.

The architecture and sculpture park

MAPh is situated on a parkland affording spectacular views of Melbourne's south-east. We acknowledge the traditional owners of this place and pay our respects to their elders both past and present.

The original part of the building was designed by internationally renowned architect Harry Seidler. It remains the only formal art gallery space designed by Seidler. With subsequent additions to the building by Cox Sanderson Ness (2000), MAPh is a fine example of contemporary Australian architecture.

Situated in landscaped grounds with stunning views of the Dandenong Ranges, MAPh is located on a landmark site once occupied by an early homestead. A sculpture park enables visitors to enjoy their art experience both inside and outside the gallery.

The MAPh Collection

MAPh holds a nationally significant collection of over 3630 Australian photographic works.

Our growing collection aims to provide a cogent and refined account of Australian photographic practices from the perspective of an art museum. As a result of our efforts to date, MAPh is the only cultural institution in the country whose collection is focussed solely on Australian photography.

Exhibitions

On average, MAPh stages 4 large exhibition seasons and one art prize each year. MAPh’s exhibitions vary in style and size but always relate to the practice and appreciation of photography. The William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize was established in 2006 and aims to promote excellence in photography.

MAPh also presents works from its important collection to a national audience through travelling exhibitions.

MAPh’s function spaces are suitable for lectures, sit-down dinners or cocktail parties and will create the perfect setting for your special event. Our spaces can accommodate up to 200 guests. A meeting room hire is also available.
