Active Pride - Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we hosting Active Pride?

This event will officially launch Monash Council's LGBTIQA+ Action Plan and we want to celebrate by opening the doors of the centre and celebrate the LGBTIQA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Asexual and other sexually or gender diverse) community within the City of Monash.

While we welcome the community every day, we want to invite those who may not feel comfortable/safe in attending the centre in our standard hours to come and see the space, try the facilities, and talk to our team about how you can Participate Your Way every day of the year.

Who can attend?

This event is to celebrate our wonderful LGBTIQA+ community and we welcome LGBTIQA+ people as well as their friends and allies to attend and join in the fun!

Are children welcome?

All children are welcome, in particular children of rainbow families and LGBTIQA+ children are welcome to the event.

There are policies in place for all patrons of the facility to have a safe and enjoyable time. They include our Watch Around Water policy, as well as age limits for facilities like the Health Club/gym.

Do I need to register or buy tickets?

Active Pride is a free event, so there is no registration required. Please check in with reception on your arrival.

Can I bring alcohol, or buy alcohol at Oakleigh Recreation Centre (ORC)?

Active Pride is a strictly alcohol-free event. You can BYO non-alcoholic drinks or buy drinks from our café onsite.

What amenities will be available at the event?

Our change facilities at Active Monash include male and female change rooms (we support our members and guest to access the change facility that they identify with) all with access to sanitary bins. We also have accessible, family friendly change rooms.

Why is inclusion important at Active Monash?

Our Active Monash Vision is Participate Your Way. We want to provide a service to our community year-round that means anyone can access our centres to be the best version of themselves.

We believe in removing barriers to support the highly diverse municipality to get active, connect with community and live a healthy life, both physically and mentally.

Active Pride is one of our ways of being inclusive by providing a safe space for the LGBTIQA+ community, their families and anyone who identifies as an ally.

What can I wear?

Please ensure if you are participating in any health club classes or using the gym, you are wearing appropriate gym clothing (closed toe shoes, comfortable clothing and bring a gym towel and water bottle). If you are participating in the aquatic activities, we ask that you do not wear denim, any items with zips, or long loose clothing such as long skirts. We also ask that if you have glitter face paint etc., that you do not enter the water.

Will the event be photographed?

We will be taking photographs and video footage throughout to celebrate the event. These items will be used in websites and on social media. If you are uncomfortable with being included in any of our photos or videos, that’s ok! Just let one of the team know.

Will this event be culturally safe?

Every effort is being made to ensure safety of all participants throughout the event. We are providing training to our team to best support participant needs, as well as clear conditions of entry. If you have any concerns, please speak to the team who will do their best to assist you.

Which pools and facilities will be available?

We will be opening most of the facility to guests, with many great activities and options for all to enjoy.

We have outdoor pools for exercise and play, including our splash pad, and our multipurpose pool too! In the Health Club/gym you will find cardio equipment, free weights, and pin-loaded machines. Please note: The gym is only open to people aged 16 years and over.

For more information about our recreation centres, please see the Active Monash website.

Is the facility accessible?

Active Monash prides itself on having a wide range of fitness options suitable for people with a disability. ORC is a single level, accessible venue with reserved access parking at the front of the centre.

There are four individual all gender, accessible change spaces in the aquatics space, three of these have baby change facilities. There is also another accessible toilet within the group exercise space.
