How to read eBooks on a computer or eReader device

Borrowing and reading eBooks on your computer is simple and they can also be read on most eReader devices, including a Kobo.  Amazon eReaders are not compatible.
Transferring the eBook to a compatible eReader is easy. Simply open the eBook download in Adobe Digital Editions on your computer and then transfer it to your eReader device.

Follow these steps:

Prepare your computer

  • Make sure that you have installed the Adobe Digital Editions software.
  • To install it, visit the Adobe Digital Editions download page and follow the installation instructions provided
  • On first launch of Adobe Digital Editions click on Help > Authorize Computer

From June 2026, Adobe Digital Editions will be managed by ByteBooks so the process to authorise a device has changed (note this change does not affect app users or those who read in their browser):

If you are an existing user and you get an error message when signing into Adobe Digital Editions:

  • Open the transition page on Adobe’s Website by clicking on either the Create an Adobe ID or forgot my password link.
  • Click on Proceed to ByteBooks ID Creation at the bottom of the page. Create a new ID
  • Critical: You must use the same email address associated with your Adobe ID. This is how your existing eBook licenses are identified and linked to your new ByteBooks account.
  • Using a different email address means your previously licensed eBooks won't be recognized.
  • Tick the checkbox I have existing Adobe eBooks to migrate.
  • Verify your email via OTP-based authentication
  • Sign back into Adobe digital editions with your ByteBooks ID
