Temporary library sites to open from mid-2026

A new chapter has begun with early works underway for Council’s $110 million Glen Waverley Civic Precinct Project, an exciting investment that will transform the heart of Glen Waverley.

The project will deliver a brand‑new, state‑of‑the‑art Glen Waverley Library, designed with modern and flexible shared spaces to support learning, creativity and community connection.

During construction, and to ensure Council can continue to deliver what will be reduced, but essential, library services to our community, we will establish temporary library sites around mid-2026 at:

We know temporarily relocating our Glen Waverley Library will cause some disruption, but we are committed to keeping our members and library users up to date as works progress.

It is an exciting time as we work together to deliver a bigger, better library for the Glen Waverley community.

Frequently asked questions

Why are we rebuilding Glen Waverley Library?

Glen Waverley is growing, and our library services and community spaces need to adapt.

Council’s $110m Glen Waverley Civic Precinct Project will transform the heart of Glen Waverley and deliver a brand‑new, state‑of‑the‑art library with modern shared spaces designed to support learning, creativity and community connection as well as a new 500-seat civic hall and events space to host events like Council's citizenship ceremonies, larger gatherings or groups and smaller community group meetings.

What library services will change?

Glen Waverley Library Express at 173 Coleman Parade, Glen Waverley

  • Reduced adult collection.
  • Express drop off and collection with self-checkout for members’ convenience via Monash Library app
  • Events, programs, and storytime will be relocated to nearby branches.
  • Reduced access to public computers.

Glen Waverley Children’s Library at Black Flat Community Hall, 685 Waverley Road, Glen Waverley

  • Dedicated space for children’s collection.
  • Regular browsing, borrowing, and storytime programming.

Why are we building temporary sites?

While some services will be reduced, our temporary library sites will allow Council to continue providing essential library services and support for the community, including some of our most vulnerable residents.

What are the key dates?

Library members and users can continue to access Glen Waverley Library services as normal until around mid-2026 when the library will be relocated to temporary sites.

Construction of the new Glen Waverley Library is expected to commence after this, as part of the broader Glen Waverley Precinct Project.

What will the layout/usage of the new library be like?

Shaped by community use and feedback, our new library will deliver a larger, more functional space that balances study and quiet learning with opportunities for community creativity and connection.

This includes dedicated quiet study zones, flexible seating arrangements, and technology-enabled spaces to support students, lifelong learners, and community groups.

Maker spaces, digital access zones, and sound studios are incorporated to foster creativity and innovation.

A dedicated children’s area will feature an amphitheatre style layout, reading nooks, and direct access to outdoor play spaces, supporting family-friendly experiences and encouraging curiosity.

What will happen to existing library parking?

The Glen Waverley Civic Precinct Project will maintain the existing 117 public car parking spaces, with 79 basement spaces allocated for longer stays and 38 short‐term spaces, along with accessible parking, EV charging and bicycle parking.

Our Bogong Avenue car park also provides over 1,000 parking spaces within a five-minute walk of the library.

What will happen to Koi Table (the outdoor table tennis table)?

Koi Table is an important part of Council's public art collection and will be re-positioned once the construction of the new library is complete. The table will not be available during construction.

Will the library collection be refreshed?

Most of the existing Glen Waverley library collection will be placed in storage during construction, with select collections dispersed between other branches including our interim sites to support community needs and interest. The new library will recall all of this material as well as be topped up by an opening day collection especially curated for the new site.
