WordFest 2026 will open with a powerful and deeply resonant in-conversation event featuring journalist Cheng Lei and writer, academic and former political prisoner, Kylie Moore Gilbert. Drawing on their lived experiences of wrongful and unjust imprisonment, Cheng and Kylie will reflect on resilience, identity and the profound personal cost of speaking truth in complex political environments. Together, they will explore storytelling as an act of survival, responsibility and resistance, examining how words become lifelines in moments of isolation, and how lived experience can drive advocacy and change. This conversation will set the tone for the festival, foregrounding courage, clarity and the enduring human need to be heard. Event details: Tuesday 2 June, 7pm Clayton Theatrette
