Previous Elections
Every 4 years, Monash residents and ratepayers vote to elect 11 Councillors to represent the community. Council elections are conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) as required under the Local Government Act 2020.
2020 Election
Voter rolls for the 2020 Local Government Elections closed at 4pm on Friday, 28 August 2020. Voters who were away during the election period could have their ballot pack redirected to an address of their choice. State-enrolled voters could also sign up to the free VoterAlert service to receive important election reminders by SMS and email.
What if I didn't vote?
Voting is compulsory if you live in the Council area.
In early 2021, people who are registered to vote, live in the Council area and failed to vote at the Council election, would have received an ‘apparent failure to vote’ notice from the Victorian Electoral Commission, asking them to return a form explaining why they failed to vote.
People who do not respond to this request or who provide an invalid response will be fined.
Postal voting 2020
The 2020 City of Monash General Elections were held by full postal voting.

Since 1997, Monash Council has used the postal method of voting, rather than attendance voting, as postal voting is considered the most efficient and accessible method of voting.
Councillor Induction Process
An extensive induction program for all newly elected Councillors at the 2020 Council elections, has been prepared.
Under the requirements of the Local Government Act 2020, all Councillors must complete the Council induction program.
Candidates' 2020 election campaign donation returns
Section 306 of the Local Government Act 2020 requires candidates of the 2020 Council elections to provide an Election Campaign Donation Return. Section 307 of the Local Government Act 2020 requires the Chief Executive Officer of the Council to provide a summary on the Council’s website.

The above summary consists of:
- The name of the candidate
- If a gift is included in the return, the name of the person who made the gift and the total value of the gift received from that person
Council 2016 election results
In the October 2016 elections, five first-time Councillors were elected to Monash Council, alongside six Councillors with previous experience.

Candidates' 2016 election campaign donation returns
All candidates at a Council election are required to submit a "candidate's campaign donation return".
In this return, all candidates must disclose any donation valued at $500 or more, which they received for their election campaign.
