Monash has local laws that are in place to protect the amenity of Monash and the safety of everyone in it. These local laws cover many aspects of daily life such as keeping footpaths and walkways clear of vegetation, sharing available parking fairly, reducing risks and ensuring the proper procedures are followed in Council meetings and elections.

Governance Rules

Under the new Local Government Act 2020, a council is now required to have Governance Rules to govern the conduct of Council meetings and meetings of any delegated committee the Council may establish.

Local Law No 2 - Administrative Procedures

The objectives of this local law are to provide how the common seal is to be applied, who may authorise its use and who can witness its use.

Monash has four local laws which are in place to protect the amenity of Monash and the safety of all those who come to be in it.

Alcohol-free zones

Clause 114 of Council’s Local Law No 3 provides that a person must not consume any alcohol or be in possession of an unsealed container of alcohol in any public place that is declared by Council to be a prohibited area.

Smoke-free areas

The purpose of the law is to promote the health and wellbeing of residents, ratepayers and visitors to the City of Monash.

Commercial or domestic noise

Noise pollution is with us almost all the time and we often do not recognise how serious its effects can be.
