Mental Health - The Blue Tree Project

Monash Blue Tree

As a part of our ongoing commitment to improving mental health in the community, Monash Council is supporting the Blue Tree Project.

Initially starting in Western Australia, the Blue Tree Project has become a national initiative aiming to break down the stigma associated with mental health.

The blue tree is a visual reminder to our community to have difficult conversations and encourage those who need to access support, to reach out.

By spreading the paint, we are spreading the message that ‘it’s okay not to be okay’.

The Monash Blue Tree is painted in the project’s signature blue colour, with lighter blue handprints overlayed on the tree by our local MYzone participants, thanks to the generous donation of paint by Wattyl.

MYzone is a free weekly Monash Youth Services program run through the Southern Community Centre, Mulgrave, for students aged 8-13 years. MYzone offers young people a social space that is supportive, supervised and safe where they can have fun, learn skills and meet new people.

Monash Council recognises that more proactive prevention is needed in our communities, and we are passionate about increasing mental health awareness to encourage our community to speak up and offer support and guidance to those struggling with their mental health, so they can access the support services they need.

Why this tree?

The Monash Blue Tree has been carefully selected in accordance with the Blue Tree Project guidelines for selecting an appropriate tree.

The Blue Tree Project stress the importance of protecting the natural habitat and environment and do not recommend painting live trees.

The tree was selected as it was dead but not hazardous and located near a Council building where a range of community groups meet on-site, maximising opportunities for conversations.

Where is the Monash Blue Tree?

The Monash Blue Tree is located at the entrance to Southern Community Centre in Mulgrave.
