Intimate partner violence is the leading preventable contributor to death, disability and illness in Victorian women aged 15 to 44. More than 1 in 3 Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15.

Council is dedicated to the prevention of violence against women

Violence against women is serious, prevalent and driven by gender inequality, but it is preventable.

Monash Council aims to prevent violence against women before it occurs by addressing the underlying causes:

Condoning of violence against women
Men's control of decision making and limits to women's independence
Stereotyped constructions of masculinity and femininity
Disrespect towards women and male peer relationships that emphasize aggression

Council has implemented innovative programs about preventing violence against women, and has identified preventing violence against women as a key strategic health and wellbeing priority of Monash Health and Wellbeing Plan.

In 2022, Monash Council endorsed a Gender Equity Framework(PDF, 3MB) which provides a clear policy statement and strategic direction, to ensure we are meeting our obligations both to the community, and under the Gender Equality Act 2020, to promote gender equality and the prevention of violence against women and family violence. The Framework builds upon Council’s previous Gender Equity Strategy 2015-2020.

Monash Council was the lead partner in the Generating Equality and Respect program, an innovative 3-year prevention of violence against women program. The program was implemented from 2012 to 2015 and was a partnership between Council, Link Health and Community, and VicHealth.

The program aimed to prevent violence against women before it occurs by:

Building communities, cultures and organisations that are gender equitable
Promote equal and respectful relationships between men and women through addressing the underlying drivers of violence against women.
