Monash Council has approved overall plans for a $500 million redevelopment of The Glen shopping centre but has reduced the height of the project’s tallest building.

At its meeting last night, Council decided to issue a Notice of Decision to grant a permit to Federation Centres for the redevelopment, which will see the retail centre extended across the existing car park in Springvale Road, Glen Waverley.

Approval has been given for three apartment buildings above the retail podium, ranging in height from 9 to 20 storeys.

Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris said the redevelopment would help ensure local residents had convenient access to boutique shopping for years to come. He said a new public square would be created at the entrance to the shopping centre, with cafes and restaurants creating a cosmopolitan connection between Kingsway and The Glen.

“Over the past decade, the Glen Waverley Activity Centre has really grown in popularity as a place to meet up with friends and enjoy a coffee or meal,” Cr Klisaris said. “This redevelopment will add to Glen Waverley’s reputation as a welcoming, safe and vibrant place to visit.”

Cr Klisaris said Council had received 67 objections and one petition (with 188 signatories) against the development. One of the main concerns raised by objectors was the height of the proposed residential buildings, the tallest of which had been proposed to be 24 storeys.

“Council agrees with the objectors that the height of the proposed Signature Tower was excessive and needed to be reduced,” Cr Klisaris said.

“We have put a condition on the permit, requiring that the tallest building be 20 storeys, four storeys fewer than what had been proposed originally,” he said.

“The Signature Tower will still be the tallest building approved so far in Glen Waverley, but this reduction in height will bring it more in to proportion with other buildings in the area, including a 15-storey tower approved last year.”

Cr Klisaris said under the permit issued by Council, Federation Centres needed to start the development within four years and complete the development within six years.
