Media response - Future of Waverley Park

Published on 02 April 2024

Approach from ABC News

I’m putting together a piece on Waverley Park and was hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction with something. The specific questions I’d love answered are:

  1. What plans, if any, does the Monash Council have for the Waverley Park sporting precinct once Hawthorn Football Club moves its base to Dingley?
  2. What concerns, if any, has the local community raised about changes proposed by Hawthorn’s exit, including around the stand and future use of the oval?

Response

The Waverley Park sporting precinct is privately owned by the Hawthorn Football Club, so Council has no specific plans for the site.

Our community understandably expressed concern about the future of the oval when Hawthorn relocation to Dingley was first raised. As the oval is part of Victorian Government master planning for the Waverley Park Estate, it is Council’s expectation that the land remains as an oval after Hawthorn’s relocation. Council is open to discussing with the club how this could best be managed.
