Media response parking revenue

Questions and Responses

How big has the hit been on parking revenue from council-run/owned parking due to coronavirus?

Monash Council does not charge parking fees for any Council-owned car parks, so there are no revenue impacts. However parking infringement income is lower than budget in 2020/21 by $1 million as at mid-financial year (Dec 2020).

How much were you down on the previous financial year?

Infringement income compared to last December 2019 (mid financial year) is lower by approx. $2.4M

How will you recoup the loss?

Financial management requires a comprehensive approach so it would be inconsistent to look at parking fine revenue in isolation.

Will it impact rates?

No. Council had already factored in reduced parking infringement revenue in its 2020/21 Budget. Council has also provided a 10% rate waiver to all ratepayers (residential, commercial and Industrial ratepayers) to assist with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.  We felt that this was one of the most immediate ways we could give our ratepayers some relief and as far as we are aware, we are the only Council to provide a cut in rates across the board.
