Work Experience and Traineeship

Monash Council supports work experience and work placements for students through a registered secondary school in a dynamic local government environment.

Our work experience program helps students meet their education requirements, and develop and enhance their skills and knowledge while being exposed to a real working environment.

It's a great introduction to a career in local government with high-calibre training, a progressive environment and the satisfaction of knowing your work really makes a difference.

Before students apply, we encourage them to think of their top 3 preferences in their areas of interests in Council.

Monash Council will generally accept work experience students in the following areas:

  • Building Surveying
  • Community Events
  • Economic Development
  • Sustainability

How to apply

Applications must be submitted a minimum of 6 weeks before your proposed placement start date.

  • Attach your resume and any introductory letters and/or placement from your school, university or program
  • Placement start dates
  • Advise of your 3 top areas

Applications for work experience should be sent to workexperience@monash.vic.gov.au

Testimonials

"Prior to my work experience, I was hoping to accomplish a week where I learn all the duties that are undertaken by the members of the customer service. I was truly amazed by the true extent of the issues that they had to deal with. I was able to develop many new skills that will prove to be invaluable in the future. Under the tutelage of the staff at Monash Council Customer Service, I have gained a newfound interest in helping the community. All of the staff were extremely kind and approachable and helped me a lot during the week. I would like to thank the staff for making feel at home despite the fact that I had a one week placement." - Hari

"For my work experience I wanted to complete a fulfilling week where I'd learn and gain insight into an industry of health, fitness and recreational activities. Doing my week of work with Active Monash allowed me to achieve this, I was able to develop new skills and a better understand of what it's like to work in an environment that encourages health and wellbeing. Through the help and guidance of the staff the skills acquired in this week helped me later in gaining a position for Active Monash as I am now a Customer Service Officer." - Leon

"I had a great experience in the office environment, with a helpful team, I learnt how to use many of the Accounts Payable applications such as Oracle and got experience of a daily office job." – Rishi

"I appreciate your help in allowing me to do my work experience at Monash. I learnt a lot this week and want to thank you for organising everything." – Om
