Street trees in Viggers Parade, Glen Waverley

Our focus is on preserving trees that are healthy and creating additional planting in local parks and reserves to boost greenery.

We will only be removing and replacing those trees that are dead, dying (with a useful life expectancy of less than two years) or dangerous (they pose a risk to the community in the short term).

Street Tree Assessments

Our arborists have completed individual tree assessments based on the above criteria and in Viggers Parade, we are proposing to remove three trees and will be planting a total of eight trees which includes an additional five trees in vacant locations.

Replacement Tree Species

Council's arborist has proposed three appropriate tree species to be considered for planting. In some cases, we will need to select two complementary species to be planted on either side of the road to accommodate constraints such as power lines, service pits and other infrastructure that exists within the street.

Survey Results

Council sought feedback (reply paid mail survey and online) on the preferred option of tree species directly affected residents would like to see planted in their street until Friday 21 September 2018.

Your street has selected Option 2 – “Malus tschonoskii Pillar Crabapple” and “Nyssa sylvatica Black Tupelo”.

In Viggers Parade a total of 11 votes were received. 10 votes for Option 2, one vote for Option 3 and 0 votes for Option 1.

Council will be responsible for the care of the new street trees for the first two years as they become established. However our residents can play a vital role in their successful establishment by keeping an eye on them and reporting to Council if they see the tree is not looking well or has been damaged.

The trees will then become part of Council’s proactive annual maintenance program, where they will be checked and pruned if necessary as part of an annual program.

Myrsine howittiana - Mutton Wood

The Ripple-leaf Mutton Wood is a small evergreen native tree or large shrub. The bark is grey to greyish-brown, smooth. The adult leaves produce a ripple-effect.

Mature Size (h x w): 3-15 x 2-6m

Option 2 - Combination of species

Malus tschonoskii - Pillar Crabapple

This tree is one of the most hardy and easily grown trees available. They are a source of bright spring blossom, and feature wonderful autumn tones and highly-colored ornamental fruits. An easy-to-grow, small trees that tolerate a wide variety of growing conditions.

Mature Size (h x w): 7 x 4m
Form: Oval - Pyramidal

Nyssa sylvatica - Black Tupelo

This tree has dark green, glossy leaves which turn yellowish-apricot to bright scarlet in autumn, creating a spectacular autumn display. This tree has good form and is rarely attacked by pests, is very drought tolerant but does benefit from irrigation during dry spells, particularly during establishment.

Lagerstroemia indica x L. fauriei'Sioux' - Sioux Upright Crepe Myrtle

Creating quite the visual impact over a lengthy period, this variety offers masses of intense, pink flowers over summer, followed by stunning, rich foliage colour in tones of yellow, red and orange through autumn, before shedding its leaves. When mature, the bark of this variety will peel, creating a mottled effect to reveal the beautiful caramel-pink colour of its under bark.

Fraxinus pennsylvanica 'Urbanite' - Urbanite Green Ash

This is fast growing tree with outstanding lustrous green foliage that maintains a healthy appearance in summer, which turns a beautiful bronze colour before falling. It adapts well to most soils and conditions.
