Several projects in the Glen Waverley Activity Centre will be reassessed whilst the Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) undertakes investigation works for its preferred station locations in Monash.

The Glen Waverley Activity Centre is one of the locations earmarked for a Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) station and Council has three inter-related projects within this Activity Centre that could be affected by the eventual preferred station location and associated works. These projects are:

  • The detailed design for a mixed use multi-level car park at 31-39 Montclair Avenue
  • The Kingsway Streetscape Renewal works (the design for which is planned to commence following completion of the mixed use multi-level carpark)
  • The marketing and sale of Council-owned properties at 14 Bogong Avenue and 155 Coleman Parade, Glen Waverley.

The SRL will eventually connect every metropolitan train line from Cheltenham to Werribee. Stage one is Cheltenham to Box Hill, which includes stations at Clayton (superhub), Glen Waverley and Monash University (Clayton).

Mayor Councillor Stuart James said that until the SRLA has made its decision on the preferred location for the SRL station in Glen Waverley, any further planning and work on the Council projects will be put on hold.

“We understand that the Suburban Rail Loop announcement is an exciting transport development for Melbourne and Monash is a key location for three stations,” Cr James said.

“However it does mean that we’ve had to reassess some of our plans for the Glen Waverley Activity Centre, including how they are prioritised and whether any projects, such as the Kingsway Streetscape Renewal works, can be brought forward.

“We are in discussions with the SRLA and they are keeping us informed as their investigation works progress. Our future planning for GWAC needs to accommodate the location of the SRL station and until we know this we can’t proceed with these projects any further for now.”

The mixed use multi-deck carpark  was set to provide a minimum of approximately 1,000 car park spaces including 499 new spaces for the Glen Waverley Activity Centre. The removal of 99 car parks from Kingsway was also planned.
